Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

I'm interested in trying out for the flight team, and on preview day, I asked one of the team members a few questions about the team, but that was a long time ago and I forgot hehe

So I would like to know a few things about the team if there are any members in the network who can answer them

1. How long is the tryout process? Approx. how many people start and how many make it through?
2. How often does the team practice? I think I vaguely remember 30 hours a week, is this correct?
3. Not all members are pilots right? What are the different positions/roles available on the team?
4. What is the criteria for selecting team members?
5. If you make the team one year, do you have to go through the tryout process again next year?
6. Does the team also use 172's for practice?
7. Approx. how many seniors, juniors, sophmores and freshmen are on the team?

Any other information about the team that I should know would be appreciated

Hey Miguel,

I'll see if I can find one of the flight team members in the office today to answer your questions. Check back soon!

Hey Miguel!
I can answer those questions for you. The tryout process is seven weeks long only in the Fall. There are six weeks in which you are studying the same material that the flight team studies and knows. The last week is all for interviews for all who are trying out. For the most part a lot people do tryout. In the Prescott, campus they normally see about 20+ tryout. How many of the tryouts make it through depends on how many team members the team needs and see potential in.

The team practices four times a week or more depending on the events you are trying to compete in. Your first year they make you concentrate on ground events which include, ACID(aircraft Identification), Scan( Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation),and CA (Computer Accuracy). You get to pick if you rather be in the ground trainer or preflight inspection event. They normally practice Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm. They have Saturday practice that normally starts at 5am and ends around 5 pm. All in all that time is right if you think about all the practices you have to go to and the time you need to make to study.

No, not all members are pilots. They try to make it as diverse as possible. As for positions on the team, there is President, Vice, chief pilot, selections officer, safety officer, public relations, administrative assistant and financial.

Selecting process all depends on you. They look at your scores, personality, attitude, grades, interview, and your motivation.

If you make it through the first year you do not have to try out the next year.

The team uses Cessna172's, and 152's for practice and competition.

To be honest I do not know how many seniors-freshmen there are on the team.

I hope this answered most of your questions. Good Luck and we will see you in the fall!

I was considering trying out, but not until my sophomore year. Do many people do that or do most people try out as freshman?

A lot of the team tryout their first year from what I have noticed. But it won't hurt to have a year under your belt. Its whatever you can handle. Just remember that being a team member requires a lot of devotion and time.
