Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Hey everyone! My name is Clancy and this is my second year here at Embry Riddle in Prescott, AZ. I have been working in Admissions as a student assistant counselor for 2 years as well. I work mostly with Bryan Dougherty who is the counselor for WA, OR, ID, MT, WY, UT, and AK. I help the counselors out with answering any questions that prospective students may have. So if you need any advice from a current student I'm here for you!

Hello Clancy,

I have a question. I am planning on coming for a campus visit on March 28. Other than my transcript, what else should I bring? And what all do you recommend I do while visiting the school? I am planning on spending all day there if possible so should have plenty of time. I guess that's all I have for now, I'm sure I'll think of more questions later.

Even though I'm not Clancy, I can answer your questions for you... In order to be accepted at ERAU, you'll need to fill out an application (available online at erau.edu/pr) get us the transcripts from your school, your SAT/ACT scores and two letters of recommendation.... As for the visit, you tell us how long you have and we'll take you on a tour of campus, the flight line, give you a chance to speak with an admissions counselor (Rob Kelm), speak with a student and/or professor, and you can even go up for a flight on us... And we'll provide lunch. Also, if you do come for a visit, you'll get $1,000 on your student account, just for visiting.

Hi, i have a couple of questions...

when doing my application for admission, i didn't select a minor, but as a future aero-sci student, i would be interested in helicopter flight.
so my question is, can i still choose a minor??
or did i have to choose it when doing the application??

and......
i said i had a couple of questions but i forgot the rest...
ill ask again when i remember them

Hi Miguel,

You can definately still choose a minor or area of concentration once you get to school. A lot of students wait until they are here at school to choose a minor.

hey, i have a question. i recently received my class schedule in the mail for fall 2009 (i will be a freshmen majoring in aero sci). on my schedule it says i have private single flight from 5:30 to 10:10. i understand that this is rather a block of time set aside to fly and i will not be expected to be at the class for the entire duration on my schedule, as it says on the letter enclosed with my schedule. out of curiosity, however, i was wondering how long the flight classes typically run, based on current students majoring in aero sci.

oh and another thing. this past school year i took the ap calculus ab test. i initially figured i'd use the credit for an elective, rather than waive an actual calc class. i took the class simply because it was the next math class to take, friends were taking it, and i figured anything i was introduced to in that class would be that much easier next time i saw it in college even if i didn't completely grasp the concepts the first time. I ended up doing well in the class, and i feel i did well on the ap test. From what i've heard about the standard freshman level college mathematics for aviation, semester one is mostly precalc and semester two is calc, each apparently with an aviation approach. i am wondering if the ap calc credit is in any way transferable to waive those specific math classed needed for my major, or if the aviation aspect is too crucial to substitute with a standard calc approach. additionally, my interest in math has led me to consider continuing math even after my required mathematics classes for the aero sci major are completed. are there higher level mathematics for aviation classes i could be moved in to? i guess the real issue is that i don't want to be bored with a class i've already taken while on the other hand i don't want to blow off the aviation aspect to move into a higher level class, just to find i'm not prepared.

umm, really sorry you had to read all this. sheesh, and during summer too.......
anyway, no hurry with the response. just let me know what can be done and/or what you recommend should be done

As for your flight block, you will not have to be there the whole time of course, and possibly not even be there at all some days. The reason it ends at 1010, is because you will have ground school at 1020 which lasts usually 90 minutes. Flight activities during your flight block will last anywhere from 1-3 hours, and can either be oral instruction, a sim, or a flight. I love the morning flight block, and would never change to afternoon or night. Although 0530 seems like a scary time, however i have only had 3 activities that early this whole year... You can also give availability during other parts of the day if you dont have class or need to do night activities etc.

As far as Calc goes, you may be able to get credit but you will have to check with records for sure, but the school does offer i believe Calculus 1-4 which are high level classes generally taken by engineers, but if you are interested you can definitely sign up for them and probably get elective credit for them. Check with records for sure as to whether you will get credit for your AP course, and whether Math can count as elective, but I dont see why not.

I'm here alll summer so it dosnt feel like summer, so not a big inconvenience haha, plus i only check in to see what kind of people are coming in and try to answer questions because I really appreciated people answering my questions when I was quickly approaching arriving at riddle and getting a students perspective.

Best of Luck, and dont hesitate to ask more if you have questions that you want answered from a student's perspective. (Aero Sci) Feel free to email me as well with questions, my email is below.

Thanks Andrew for your excellent answer! Just to clarify the math thing real fast, the AP Calc class will almost certainly transfer in. I do not see any problems with you skipping calc when you get here as long as your AP score on the test was at least a 3. As per your degree requirements for Aeronautical Science, 2 years of math are required for your bachelor's degree. The AP Calc will count for one but you'll have to do another class like Stats or if you want, another higher level of calculus.

thanks a lot. that sounds great. do i need to wait to have the class changed untill i get there this fall, or should i try to have it changed sooner? my ap scores should be sent automatically to erau, but that shouldnt be untill after the first week or so in july.

oh another thing. where can i go to get the list of classes required for the aero sci major and see how they are typically distributed over a 4 year degree? i found one a few months back on the erau website, but it is now no longer available. once again thanks guys.

I would wait until the AP scores have been received here. Once we have them, give Cindy Amen a call (800) 888-3728 and she can change your schedule. Also, you can find a list of classes and a typical "road map" of when you take them in the Prescott catalog. www.erau.edu/degrees/catalog.html

Hey Clancy, Doug, or whoever else is answering questions,I'll throw one out there... I'm going to be attending this fall in the Aeronautical science program, flying helicopters. I was wondering what the school recommends when it comes to the funding of said flight training. I am planning on doing my training through universal helicopters, and I know they have a loan/financing system, but I hadn't heard if that is preferable to a private loan or not.

Usually the funding that Universal provides is better than private loans. This program is so new that we haven't really been able to examine all of the options. Traditionally, fixed based operators have been able to work with private companies and/or the government to provide some pretty awesome financial aid. Once the program gets up and running full speed, ERAU will be able to provide helicopter students the same financial aid for fixed wing students.
