Hello Dustin. I'm David, I live on Kauai, and I am currently a sophomore in high school. I'm interested in attending ERAU's Prescott Campus and also plan to major in aeronautical science.

I have a few questions to ask. From the student's perspective, how is college different from high school? How are the classes set up in the Aeronautical Science major? Are they difficult? Also, how diverse is the student life? Are you placed in classes with students from different grades?

If I think of any more questions, I'll just add them later. Thanks!

Aloha David,

How does College differ from High School?
- Basically it’s a time when you are finally on your own. It’s your decision to go to class its your decision to do your work, its your decision to make the right choices. It’s your decision in High School as well but the way I see it in College you are paying for every penny for it’s up to you to make the most of it!
- Its a bit more laid back then high school at least for me coming from Kamehameha. My every move isn't being looked at making sure that my shirt is tucked in or my belt is on and things like that. It’s a lot freer here.
- The work load can be stressful obviously it’s not High School and you should expect that from a college. But the work load is do-able you just have to have the self motivation to do it and get it done.
- Its all about being discipline and getting your things done.

How are the classes set up in the Aeronautical Science major?
- We have a number of classes that you are required to take if you go on the embry riddle website and follow the links it will take you to the list of classes what is required and how they are set up.

Is it hard?
- Being that this is second year it’s kind of hard to answer this question. The classes that I took my first year were pretty easy. But it can only get harder from here on out. The classes are going to get more intense in different study areas, etc. But it’s something that you can except from a college.

Are you placed in classes with students from different grades?
- Yes you are at times placed in classes with students of all grade levels and some with just your specific grade level. It all just depends on the classes that you register for.

How diverse is the student life?
- Life as a student here is great. The student population is small giving its ups and downs. The small population gives you the opportunity to meet some really great people from all over the world getting to learn just more then you are paying for in school, you get to do some really great things and just over all have a great time. The town of Prescott is pretty small but it does offer a lot of outdoor activities to do, having a car also helps out a lot Phoenix and Flagstaff are just under 2 hours away and offer a lot of things to do as well.
- To me it’s just about getting up here getting your feet and hands dirty and finding out what it really has to offer you.

But over all it’s a really great place to be. You couldn't ask for better flying conditions here in good old Prescott. Throughout my entire first year I only weathered three of my flights. The sun is always out the sky is always clear and it’s just a blast to get out get up and go flying.

I was worried before I came here about the work load and if I could really handle everything about "college" but it’s turning out to not be that bad. Like I said if you stay on top of your game and keep everything in line you are going to do fine!

But if you have any more questions feel free to email me any time...

So i'm going to apply to ERAU this fall and i had a couple questions about life in college.

1) How's the culture shock? Was it weird not being in Hawaii anymore?

2) How is living on campus the first year?

3) Was it easier to apply online or with paper? Because i went and visited the campus so i have that free app fee thingy. Do you need to pay them 50 dollars online and if so how do i use that ticket stubb coupon thing?

Aloha Kevin,

1) How's the culture shock? Was it weird not being in Hawaii anymore?
The Culture shock isn't bad at all! Yes its weird not seeing the ocean for one! But being here in arizona I keep in the back of my mind that I'll be home again soon! My next break is right around the corner! I do get a little more sick at times but being that I am in the middle of my second year it has gotten a lot better! I have learned to cope with the idea of not being in Hawaii and you will learn that very quickly|.

2) How is living on campus the first year?
Honestly it really wasn't that bad. Its bad if like me you get stuck in Hall 5 the only non renovated hall on campus. But still it wasn't that horrible. I believe that we have way nicer dorms then UH Manoa. WAY NICER! hahah....but its great you really learn to live by yourself be an adult, wash your own clothes, etc. etc. It help I think in getting to know people getting comforable around the campus and just getting to know yourself as an adult now rather than a child at home. You will complain and complain like I did but once its over you really won't think of it sa being so bad after all.

I do understand that you have applied so I won't answer your number three...sorry it has taken us so long to reply to your thread.

But if you have any other questions feel free to contact me via email or phone my info is listed below!

What academy were you in when you were in high school? What kinds of classes did you take in that academy?

I'm currently taking IET. Had to ask the counselor which academy I should go in. It's confusing, though, because after the IET core, there's classes for woodshop, auto, drafting, and stuff like that. None of them really pertain to aeronautics. Think you can help me?
